Daniël Bernardus (Daan)
van Schalkwijk was born in 1982 in Laren (NH).
He
completed an International Baccalaureate education at the International SchoolHilversum “Alberdingk Thijm” in 2000, and went on to study Biology at the VrijeUniversiteit Amsterdam (VUA), where he received his Bachelor’s degree cum laude in biology in 2003 and his
Master’s degree in theoretical biology in 2006. During his Master period he did
an internship in Alcalá de Henares on modeling forest growth in the Madrid area; he also did
an internship at the Theoretical Biology department at the VUA on modeling
sleep energetics. As a PhD student, he was employed at the Leiden AmsterdamCentre for Drug Research (LACDR) at Leiden
University, but stationed at TNO in Zeist (2006-2010). In the
later stages of his PhD project (March 2010 - present) he started working as a
research scientist at TNO. He was awarded a young investigator award by the
International Atherosclerosis Society at their symposium in Boston in 2009. In 2011 he started teaching
at Amsterdam University College and started being director of
Leidenhoven College,
a collegeate hall of residence in
Amsterdam,
next to his work at
TNO.
